 What is a VPN?






  • VPN: Virtual Private Network
  • It is a service or method which is used to add security and privacy to private and public networks
  • VPN is a secure tunnel between 2 or more devices
  • VPN Verifies authentication between two hosts then outsiders (h@ckers) won't be able to see the data (encrypted)

How does VPN Work?

  • When you connect to the internet, you first connect to your ISP
  • All your internet traffic passes through your ISPs
  • When using VPN you connect to a server run by your VPN provider via an encrypted connection
  • All your data traveling between your computer and the VPN server is encrypted
  • It gives another IP Address instead of your IP address (during surfing)

Types of VPN

  • Remote Access VPN :
    • Remote Access VPN ⇒ allows a user to connect to a private network and access its services and resources remotely
    • useful for business users as well as home users

  • Site-to-Site VPN :
    • also called Router-to-Router VPN
    • mostly used in Companies and Organization
    • Many companies have offices located both nationally and internationally,
      • so this VPN is used to connect the network of the main office location to multiple offices

4 Protocols used in VPN

  • PPTP: Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol
  • L2TP: Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol
  • IPsec: Internet Protocol Security
  • SOCKS: is not used as much as the ones above

Why use a VPN?

  • A VPN can be used as a remotely way
  • A VPN allows us to connect private networks securely
  • It allows us to bypass Internet Censorship
  • It hides our location

Types of VPN Attacks

  • Session Hijacking
    • These hijackers steal the IP Addresses, the sequence numbers, etc and then these h@ckers start their attack

  • Man in the Middle Attack [MITM
  •               H@ckers establish a connection with the client's computer instead of the server
  • Spoofing
    • Attackers use techniques with which they can get their identity info authorized with the help of spoofing through emails or IPs

  • VIRUSES
    • These viruses steal the identity info of the client's computer and provide it to the attackers, who then use this info to steal VPN Session
